God is For You • Dec 02nd 1987
Discover how God is truly for you in this installment of the Romans series – Chapter 8. Gene Edwards unpacks God’s divine plan to conquer insecurity through justification, glorification, and intimate union with Christ.
You, the legalist, have been set free, and now you live in the life of the Spirit. You live not in the letter of the law, but in the freedom of His Spirit. In the Spirit of God, not in the letter of the law. And I want you to all stop, because you must realize that each and every one of you lives under some kind of law, and God saw that, and He didn’t like that. And He was pulling for you. So, you know what He did? He did away with the law. He did a little bit more than that. He gave you His Spirit. And He looked down upon your flesh, and it was so weak. And He said, “You cannot possibly fulfill the law because you’re so weak.” And God said, “I have a great idea, in this mess you’re in, I’m going to deliver you out of this mess.”
By the way, I’m still in the book of Romans. I hope you know this. I’m going through the book of Romans here. You’re in such a mess. You’re so weak. You can’t do anything moral. You can’t do anything right. You can’t do anything good. You can’t get anything done right. You are, in fact, a failure, brother. You’re a failure. You are especially a failure. Such a failure. I try to do something good, and I end up doing something bad. I despise making the mistakes I make, and I end up making them anyway. ‘I’m never going to do that again, that is stupid.” And God saw you floundering about, not really trying your best to do anything decently. You couldn’t do the law. Someone said, “I wasn’t even very good at sinning.” Total sense of failure. Living poor in faith. What are you going to do in a situation that helpless? You’re going to let God work out something really good for you because you do love Him.
By the way, the reason you loved Him is because you were imagined by Him. But we’ll get to that later. Point: you couldn’t do it. No matter how hard you tried. What a messy mess. What a wonderful outcome. You know what He did? He did two things. What the law could not do – what? God did. And that’s the verse of Scripture. What the law could not do, God did. Say it again: what the law could not do, God did. What your flesh could not do, God did. God did.
Now you tell me why God did it. God did it because… Amen! You got it! He did it because He was for you. He was pulling for you, just you. He was in your corner. And so, He did it instead of you. And this is what good came out: you quit doing it. And He did it in your place. He destroyed the law, separated you from it, and then He lived out—He lived out—the law in your place. He fulfilled it. And then we found out, for those of you who really have a hard time being a Christian, some of you take failure worse than others do. Who takes failure really bad, Christian failure? You just really, really, you really, really have a hard time with it. Well, sister, see, you are psychotically insecure.
The Lord alone can live the Christian life. You are a failure at living the law. And He illustrated it with marriage. You got married to the law, and you couldn’t please that guy for nothing. So, God took the law out and killed it. Right? No, not at all. He took you out and killed you. Praise the Lord. He didn’t touch the law, but He separated you from the law, raised you from the dead, and then He married you. Praise the Lord. You know why He did that? Because He was on your side. Hallelujah. And it worked out for good. You, the Christian failure, ended up letting the Lord live your life when you ended up being married to Him.
Hallelujah. Praise the Lord. And if you are not responding to this, you need to have your head examined. Amen, brother. You cannot sit here—and this is Romans 1, Romans 2, Romans 3, Romans 4, Romans 5, Romans 6, Romans 7—and we’re about to come to Romans 8.
God took the sense of condemnation that you live under. You know what He did with it? He took all the sense of condemnation there is, and He thrust it into sin. But then He sentenced sin. In the body of Christ, He sentenced and He destroyed sin in death. And when He did, He took all condemnation with Him.
And I’m going to ask you a really serious question: can you be condemned? Yes, you can be condemned. But you can’t be condemned by anybody that matters. The devil can condemn you – it doesn’t matter. Ken can condemn you – that doesn’t matter. Death can condemn you. And your wife can. And your husband can condemn you. But all that condemnation has been put in the grave. All of it. And you can condemn yourself. Right. Every day. Yes. But sister, God is on your side. Even if you are not on your side.
I don’t think you understand that all condemnation has been removed. Every bit of it. On you who are psychotically insecure, you’re sitting in a room; believe all this. It’s not—believe. That’s all right. He took all the condemnation there is and condemned it. He can no longer condemn you under any conditions.
“Yeah, but you just don’t know. Gene, you just don’t know me. You just don’t know me. You don’t know how unworthy I am.” Amen, my brother. That is really true. You have no holiness in you. That’s really true. So God did away with your holiness. And you know what He did? And this is in the Scripture: He gave you the holiness of the Holy Spirit. And you and your rags—He took away your holiness and gave you His own. The holiness of His own Spirit.
Now I don’t know if you’re getting a message here or not, but Paul of Tarsus is torturing paper and pen, and he is covering everything he can to get a point over to you: that God is for you. You may not be for you. Nobody else may be for you. But that doesn’t matter. God is for you. God is really, truly for you. “You mean the person sitting next to me? You don’t understand my case. My case is different. I’m worse than other people.” Yes, well, that’s why He died for the ungodly—the worst case of all. And then He plugged up every loophole. He cemented over every possible leak there could be, until He had reached a point where you cannot be condemned.
Praise the Lord. Your mind was once in the flesh, and He said, when the smoke cleared, your mind is in the spirit. “Gene, I don’t feel that way.” Doesn’t matter whether you feel that way or not. Tonight, for one small moment, will you believe your mind is in the Spirit? God took your mind out of the flesh and put it in His Spirit, and that’s where your mind dwells. And that was because God was on your side.
