God is For You • Dec 02nd 1987
In this powerful teaching from Romans 8, Gene Edwards explores one of the most encouraging truths in all of Scripture: God is for you.
Many believers struggle with guilt, insecurity, fear of failure, and a lingering sense of condemnation. Romans 8 answers those fears with a breathtaking declaration of God’s love and commitment toward His people. Through Romans 8:28-39, this message reveals how God works all things together for good and demonstrates that nothing can separate us from His love in Christ Jesus.
The teaching walks through the believer’s journey from helplessness, sin, spiritual failure, and condemnation into grace, sonship, freedom, and life in Christ. Gene emphasizes that God acted on behalf of humanity when humanity could do nothing for itself. While we were helpless, sinners, enemies of God, and under the sentence of death, God intervened through Jesus Christ.
Special attention is given to Paul’s declaration: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” This passage becomes the foundation for understanding Christian assurance. The believer’s security is not based on personal performance, religious achievement, or the ability to keep laws. Instead, it rests entirely on God’s initiative, God’s grace, and God’s purpose.
This Romans 8 study also explores:
Throughout the message, listeners are reminded that God’s love is steadfast and unchanging. No failure, weakness, fear, circumstance, power, or spiritual force can separate believers from the love of God found in Christ Jesus.
If you have ever struggled with feelings of unworthiness, spiritual defeat, or doubt about God’s acceptance, this teaching offers a fresh look at the liberating truth of the gospel. Romans 8 presents a God who is relentlessly committed to His people and who has gone to extraordinary lengths to secure their salvation and future inheritance.
Watch and discover why the Apostle Paul could confidently declare that believers are more than conquerors through Christ—and why the greatest answer to insecurity is knowing that God is truly for you.
“Well, I’m still just a little bit insecure. Those are all wonderful things, but I’m still just a little insecure.” Well, He took care of that, too. When all else failed, you know what He did? When everything else He could possibly do, and you wouldn’t believe, and you wouldn’t respond—or you didn’t respond—that’s okay too. You’re not condemned for that. You know what He did? He took adoption papers out on you. That’s what He did. He went to the utter limit. It was a wonderful adoption. He took adoption papers out on you that were so complete that you ceased to be adopted and became genetically His own.
Now, there is that urchin out there who was sinful, ungodly, an enemy, and hopeless—has now been made a son of God, to the point that Jesus Christ is no longer God’s son, but His first son, and now it’s a whole family.
“But Gene, I’m a girl. I’m not a boy.” Yes, that includes you, too. You have been made a daughter. “Well, I never was good at positional truth.” Well, God did not give you positional truth in sonship. He gave you an indwelling Holy Spirit. You might sense your sonship. Every time you are led by Him, He is saying, “This is proof you are my son or my daughter.”
He made you a son. Praise the Lord. Now then, you are almost; by the way, why did He make you His son? Amen. He is for you.
Now this horrible mess you started out in has worked together for good. He has done so much for you. You can’t imagine when He walked up on the stage, how intent He was for you. There are no leaks in this, saints. You go back and try to read Romans 1–8 and try to find a loophole anywhere. Find a leak. Find a condition. Find any kind of condition. It’s not there. This is God pressing the limits of God to make a point. Well, just so you would really, really be secure, He made it really clear to you that you are not only a son, but you are included in His inheritance. You are not going to be one of these sons or daughters who don’t get the inheritance.
Now, do you know what you are going to inherit? You are going to get something glorious. That’s a hint. What are you going to get? Anyone want to tell me? But what is glory? You got it. What are you going to get? What are you going to inherit? You are going to inherit the one thing you do not have. That’s right! You don’t have a glorified body. That, in fact, is your only problem, my dear friend. You are dragging around ⅓ of an unredeemed human being. Whereas ⅔ of you are locked in. ⅔ of you couldn’t be better in the eyes of almighty God.
