God is For You • Dec 02nd 1987
Discover how God is truly for you in this installment of the Romans series – Chapter 8. Gene Edwards unpacks God’s divine plan to conquer insecurity through justification, glorification, and intimate union with Christ.
“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life,
nor principalities, nor angels,
nor things present, nor things to come,
nor powers, nor height, nor depth,
nor any other created thing
shall ever be able to separate you
from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus your Lord.”
Hallelujah. Praise the Lord. Amen. Let’s give Him an applause. Praise the Lord. Amen. Amen, Lord. Glory to Your name. Amen. Stand up and give Him an applause.
Glory for Jesus Christ. Amen. Amen. Amen, Lord. Praise Your name. Hallelujah.
All right, now let’s sit down and go back over this again—for the chronically insecure.
The scene opens. There are present the entire human race of every age, and every time, and every place, all gathered together. And most of them are trying to find a right relationship with a God they fear—fearing His wrath, fearing His… what was it? The words that we discovered as we went along there. Indignation, distress, anger, and what else? All sorts of things like that – none of them positive. These people are all gathered here. And I want you to see, and you’re one of them, and I want you to see the complexity of this thing.
I want you to see all the Jews there, about to stand before God in the complexity of the law, wondering if they really did fulfill all those little itty-bitty things, and if God was really, if this is the way God was really looking at it.
All right. And here are all of the Gentile, heathen pagans over here, wondering if their good deeds outweigh their bad deeds. And I think most of them in the crowd know they’re in big trouble with this God, who has talked about wrath and indignation, and all these terrible things. Now then, everyone is at best apprehensive, and most of them are terrified. Can anything good come out of this? It looks really stark, dark, and bad, and it is extremely complex. I mean, there is complexity in this – the complexity of the law, the complexity of keeping records of good and bad. I cannot speak for all the people who are there, but for you, that day, everything that happened worked out for you. Praise the Lord.
Everything, even though you were faced with the law, and you should have known (if you didn’t know instinctively), you didn’t stand a prayer. And those of you who were Gentiles should have known your bad outweighs your good, and all of it was so complex.
Could anything good come out of this? And the truth of the matter is, for you, everything about that day worked out well for you. Do you know why? Do you have any idea?
I’m going to tell you all: because God was for you.
God was for you.
And so, He stepped in, and He threw out all the regulations of the law that were too complex for God or man to understand. And He threw out all the record-keeping that comes with pursuing justification and righteousness through good deeds. He threw it out. And He took all the complexities of this terrible mess of good deeds and law, and He replaced it with the simplest thing that God in His great imagination could come up with, and that was:
Faith in His Son.
