Debrecen Messages #7 – The New Man: God’s Visible Image and Rule on the Earth

In Debrecen #7, Gene Edwards brings the entire Debrecen series to its theological and experiential climax. This message reveals why God created, what Genesis 1 truly points to, and who now bears God’s image on the earth.

The teaching begins by returning to a foundational truth: everything that happened before creation was hidden at the moment creation began. Christ before creation, the Lamb slain, the book of life, the choosing of a people in Christ—all of it became mystery. Genesis 1–2 does not explain these realities openly; it hides them in symbols, shadows, and images.

Gene Edwards emphasizes that Genesis 1–2 contains no sin, no fall, and no damage. Everything is declared good—very good. These chapters reveal God’s intention, not humanity’s failure. To understand them, Scripture must be read backward—from Christ to Genesis—not forward from Adam.

At the heart of Genesis 1 is a staggering declaration: “Let us make man in our image… and let them rule.”
This was never about an individual. It was always about a corporate humanity—a them, not a him.

A major revelation of this message is that the new man precedes the old man. The new man was chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world. The old man—the fallen Adamic humanity—was crucified before he ever appeared in history. The cross did not react to the fall; it preceded creation itself.

This overturns conventional thinking. The new creation is not God’s backup plan—it is His original reality. Adam is a picture; Christ and His body are the reality.

Gene Edwards traces how all creation points to Christ:

  • Light reveals Christ
  • Trees reveal Christ
  • Fish reveal Christ
  • Birds reveal Christ
  • Cattle reveal Christ as servant and sacrifice

These are not metaphors invented later—they are shadows of realities that existed before creation.

The message then moves to the earthly life of Jesus Christ. For a brief moment, Genesis 1 became visible reality. God walked the earth in a man. The image of God was seen. Dominion was exercised. The serpent was defeated. But there was still one command left unfulfilled: “Be fruitful and multiply.”

That command was fulfilled at the cross and resurrection. Christ, the true seed, fell into the ground and died. On resurrection—and ultimately at Pentecost—He multiplied. A them appeared. The Ecclesia was born.

The church is not an organization, meeting, sermon, or system. It is the visible image of the invisible God, moving on the earth as Christ once did. Where the church truly functions as a body, Christ is seen. Where believers merely sit and listen, Christ remains hidden.

This message makes a bold claim: until Christ returns, the church is God’s visible image on the earth. She bears His likeness. She exercises His authority. She displays His life—not as individuals, but corporately.

Gene Edwards concludes with the burden that fuels his life and ministry:
God will have a visible people who show forth His Son.
Not someday.
Now.

Now, that’s all I’m going to say. Just keep looking for image and rule. The purpose of God in creating man was simple. That man might rule the earth and he might show forth visibly the invisible God.

Now, come with me to the New Testament. What have you got? You got a man. He is a carpenter. He’s a blue-collar worker. He’s not a great king. He’s a carpenter. David, he’s a carpenter. You’re an electrician, David. I mean, Daniel. Was there someone else who has a trade? We got two electricians and one carpenter. In America, you’re called a blue-collar worker. It means you don’t have a white collar with a tie. You wear a blue denim shirt that gets dirty easy and washes easy. Here is a blue-collar worker who is a carpenter who lives in Nazareth.

Now, answer me this. When you see him, what do you see? What do you see? When you see Jesus, what do you see? He’s visible. What do you see? Come on, talk to me. You know what you see. You see God. You don’t see the image of God. You see God visible. Here is the reality of Adam. Adam, the picture. Adam, the shadow. Adam, the image. And here is reality. Here is the real one. So, he is fulfilling God’s purpose for man. And he is showing forth God. Is this not true?

And he walks out into the desert, and he’s baptized. He has God in Him and he has God on Him. And he comes back to the cities and the villages. And he also meets the snake. Now, the last time a man met a snake, who won? The snake won. This time, the real snake is there, and the real man is there. Who wins? The real man. The real man.

And now there are demons that are in people. Who wins? The real man. Does Jesus Christ, while he walks on this earth, have the authority of God? And does he rule? Absolutely. Absolutely. He is totally in charge in all cases.

You see him moving? That’s God. You hear him talking? That’s God. You see him praying? That’s God. You see him functioning? You see his many gifts in operation? You see him? It’s God. You’re getting a picture of God. That’s real. You’re getting the image of God on the earth visible. And God, your Father, is determined that on this earth there will be the visible image of God seen on this earth before men, before snakes, before kingdoms, before principalities, and before powers. That is why he created. That he’s got it in Jesus. And Jesus not only bears his image, but he tries to do this very quietly. Would you not tell anybody about this? Go to the priest. Let Moses take the credit. Be purified in the words of, according to the commandments of Moses. Tell the one. Yeah. He doesn’t want to make a show of rule.

Does God have his purpose on the earth? When Jesus Christ is on this earth, he’s got his new creation. Only, it’s just one man. He hasn’t been fruitful and multiplied yet. He has not fulfilled God’s commandment, yet. God said to Adam, be fruitful and multiply. And do you know something else? The Father said to Jesus, be fruitful and multiply. Bear my image. Let them see me, Jesus, my son. And rule. Yeah. Especially over snakes. Rule over the enemy. While Jesus Christ is on this earth, God is the God of heaven and earth because Jesus Christ is here on this earth, ruling. Maybe not in the way you and I would see him rule. See, they expected him to take a throne in Rome or Jerusalem. But he ruled. Because he ruled invisible things while he was here. And Satan had no authority, except what was given him. What Jesus’ father allowed him to have. Jesus let us see what God was like. And he ruled. But he was not fruitful and multiplied.

Now, the Lord told the seed to fall into the ground and be fruitful and multiply. And what is that, Timothy? Yes, that is a picture of being fruitful and multiplying. That’s a seed falling into the earth and dying. That seed didn’t fall into the earth and die, or come forth with many seed. What it did was picture the real seed falling into the earth and the real seed coming up and the real seed multiplying. That seed is a picture.

Wheat is one of the most wonderful pictures of Jesus Christ. And so is barley. Take a wheat seed and throw it in the ground. It dies, and it comes up many seed, and it is fruitful and it multiplies. After its kind. Adam never got around to being after his kind. Jesus came to earth and was after his kind.

And so, Jesus Christ said to the Father, I have borne your image and I have exercised dominion. And now I’m going to be fruitful and multiply. And I am the real wheat.

And he went to the cross and said, Father, now it is time for you to glorify the Son. That’s right. He glorified the Son in his death. In falling to the ground. And I’m not going to be able to sit here any longer. So, Tim, grab the camera. I’m going to stand up. I can’t stand this sitting down.
