The Mystery in God • Dec 23rd 2025

Where Were You Before Creation (Part 1)

What was God doing before the first act of creation ever took place? Gene Edwards invites us into a realm where time and space do not exist to explore the mysteries that preceded the universe. He reveals that long before the fall of man, the Father’s love for the Son was the central reality and the Lamb was already looked upon as slain. We discover that as believers, we were chosen in Christ before the heavens were formed, destined for a union that transcends our temporal struggles. Gene Edwards helps us understand that our identity is rooted in an eternal purpose that existed when God was all there was. Join us for a reflective journey into the timeless love that preceded creation itself.

There is another realm, and you cannot get there in a rocket ship, no matter how far you travel. You only get there through a door. There is another realm. It is a realm where all things are spirit. It’s the realm where God lives. Physical, spiritually. Dimension. No dimension. Time. No such thing. Space. No such thing. Physical matter. Mass. No physical matter in it. No mass. Visible. Invisible. Two different realms. The invisible realm preceded the physical realm. The spiritual realm preceded the material realm.

Now, we’re about halfway there. The problem is that there was a time when there was no spiritual realm, either. The spiritual realm is big, but that’s not true because it has no dimension. It’s very small, but that’s not true because it has no dimensions. You can’t measure it. I’m going to tell you what some of you have heard me say. I want to say it again. It will help you a little bit. Albert Einstein, during the days when he was here on this earth and alive and being listened to, stepped off a train, and there were a large number of newspapermen there before him, and they said, “We do not understand the theory of relativity. Would you please state it in a way that we can understand it, and we can print it in the paper, and people will understand?” I’d like for you to listen to his words. He said, “Well, in order for there to be time and dimension and for there to be space, the worlds we live…this realm…there has to be physical matter. If there is no physical matter, there is no space, and there is no time. They both disappear.

Well, we can kind of grasp that it takes things like the moon, the earth, and the sun to produce dimension, space, and time. But then he went on to say he said now then if you were to remove all the matter, the physical matter, the physical mass in our entire creation, do not assume that there would therefore be a great abyss of nothing. He said, “Without mass, even nothingness would not exist.” Now I know you understand that, don’t you? That’s the state of things before God created the physical visible universe. Well, brother, for us to try to contemplate that even there was a time when there was no spiritual realm, nothing that was spiritual or spirit. Now there’s one thing that precedes everything in being spirit, and that is God. That God is spirit. Those are the words of the Lord. God is spirit. Those who worship Him will worship Him in spirit.

Let’s remove the known universe. Now let’s remove the spiritual realm, the heavenlies…heaven… whatever you want to call it. Remove it. What have you got left? All you have left is God. So here is God in a vast abyss of nothing. No, our minds cannot contemplate this, but you can’t do this. You can’t make the circle. You know, on your camera there’s this little infinity sign…an eight lying on its side. It means forever and forever and forever. God was all there was, and there was not an abyss also of nothingness. There was just God, and we say, therefore, He was All. Wow. Say wow. Wow. Thank you very much. Wow. Try to deal with these things. It’s virtually impossible.

Let’s discover that He had several things going on in His revelation, not in His mind, in His revelation. For He isn’t mental; he revelates. He doesn’t think, He revelates. He moves by revelation, not by what we understand physical knowledge to be. Now, there are three or four things that happen. One of them is a mystery. There’s a mystery hidden in God. What’s the mystery? Well, if we know what it is, it’s not a mystery. There is a mystery. Now, then, the next thing we discover is that there’s a purpose. He has a purpose. He’s going to do something, and in doing it, He has a purpose. Are you with me? Boy, I tell you, at this point, I would really like to get out and walk. You and I know the mess that came about when this creation fell. It wasn’t destroyed, but it fell. You and I know that this creation needs a lot of help. For instance, like a man drowning who needs to be saved, this creation is in a mess and needs to be saved. Like a drowning man needs to be rescued, redeemed. You know, you go to a pawn shop, give them a ticket, pay your money, and redeem whatever it was they had…that the pawn shop had. This creation needs to be redeemed. It needs the owner to come back and get it. It needs to be saved. It needs to be redeemed. A lot of it needs to be done away with because it’s hopeless.

There are some things you give up on, but be careful here, dear, dear child of the Lord. Don’t get too involved in that fall, because when we speak of God’s purpose, the fall of this creation is a very small part of that purpose. As great as it is to you and me and our needs, it’s small in that the purpose of God is eternal, which means it stretches from one end of God to the other. Or if that’s too big, then, from one end of the heavens to the other, from one end of creation to the other. Plus, before creation and after creation. In other words, it’s not for a temporal purpose. Whatever His purpose is before He creates, it’s the same purpose He has after creation. So, we have a God now who is about to create, but before He does, He has a mystery and a purpose. The mystery we don’t know. The purpose goes beyond any event that occurs during the time of creation. It goes before it. It goes beyond it. It is bigger than this creation. He has a purpose.

Now, I’m going to tell you something. You know the old story of the watchmaker who makes the watch, and he makes it for a reason. That watch decides it wants to live underwater…it’s living outside the bounds of its purpose. It won’t work. You can kick, you can scream, you can yell, you can holler, you can do anything you want to, but unless you get in tune with the watchmaker, life doesn’t make sense. Now, do you know that? Are you clear about that? Well, say so if you are; four or five people in here are clear about this. You can’t go against universal divine law. You go with it, or life doesn’t work. But I’m ahead of myself because right now God hasn’t created. Now, what is God at this moment? He’s the All. He’s the All. He’s going to create. His purpose for that creation precedes that creation and goes beyond it when it disappears.

Now, we’re going to ask a question. God is about to create the spiritual realm. Now, there’s God. Alright, did you get that? Here’s the spiritual realm, and inside the spiritual realm will be the physical realm. Only the first one…I can’t stretch that far, saints.  He’s going to create the realm of the spirituals. Then, He’s going to create the realm of the physical. We’re all familiar with that; we know God created. That’s not what this message is about. This message is about what happened before He created either one of those realms. What happened before God created? Now, to the little lady sitting over there in that living room. Yes, ma’am. Just right over that way. Do you know what God did before He created? And sir, you…the theologian there. Yes, sir. Yes, I’m speaking to you. Do you know what activity preceded the creation? What happened before God created either the angels or the seraphim and the cherubim, and He created this realm and the cats and the dogs and people? What happened before creation? I’m sure you can tell. You can’t? Then why do you call yourself a theologian? (laughter)

I’m sure that all the people in this room know what God did before He created, and that’s what we’re going to talk about, but I’m really up against it here, and that is I have a finite mind and I’m talking to a room full of people with finite minds and I’ve got to talk about things that are infinite. I think that more than anything else, you need to hold on from this point on…besides your chair…you need to hold on to this one thing: that God is, at this point before creation, God is All, and that anything that happens will be in Him.

I remember when Novas were first discovered. I think it was Novas or Pulsars; maybe it was pulsars. They had found the greatest concentration. They found one, the first one they found. This was in my lifetime and yours. They discovered the first pulsar ever found and had never seen that much energy so concentrated, so they announced it to the world. For one split second, I said maybe they found God, because there was so much energy in it, more than they could conceive of in the galaxy, concentrated so small. Then I immediately remembered, no, this galaxy is in God. He’s not…God’s not in this galaxy. This galaxy is in my God, and so is Andromeda, and so is Vega, and so are all the others. I don’t know their names. Can you imagine that? All of this in God. That’s a very big God. Creation is in Him. But let’s try to imagine, prior to creation, that He is the All, and then try to remember that creation happens in Him. And if you can’t get a hold of that, you may drown before this meeting’s over. Okay, I’m going to stop. How am I doing? Can you understand this? Can you understand everything that’s been said so far? Well, wonderful. Please explain it to me then.

I’m going to read five verses that will tell us what happened before God created. The first one is in John 17. Now, I’m reading literature written about 2,000 years ago by people who probably understood this better than Einstein did. John 17:24. This is the Lord Jesus praying. He is only hours away from the cross. And He says, “Father, I desire that they,” and those were the people who followed Him. “Also, whom you have given Me, that they be with Me, where I am. Now, where is He? Is He on earth? Yes, He is on earth, but He is also in the other realm. Well, no, He isn’t, Gene. That can’t be done. Yes, if part of you is spirit, then part of you is in the other realm. Be with Me where I am so that those who follow Me may behold My glory. Isn’t that incredible? All of this so that we can see Him as He is.
