Debrecen Messages #5 – Christ Before Creation: The Reality Behind All Things

In this profound message from Debrecen, Hungary, Gene Edwards takes listeners back to the moment just before creation—before “Let there be”—to uncover a foundational truth: Christ is the reality; creation is the shadow.

The Christian faith is often taught by starting with the earthly life of Jesus, but this message insists that we cannot truly understand Christ unless we begin before Genesis, when only the Father, the Son, and the Spirit existed. Long before creation came into being, Christ already was. He did not discover His identity in Bethlehem; He brought His eternal reality into time.

This teaching reveals that everything created bears the imprint of Christ because God cannot create without expressing Himself. Just as an artist leaves something of his nature in his work, God left Christ’s likeness woven into creation itself. Wheat, water, bread, stones, trees, lambs, oil, light, and rest were all created as pictures of a reality that already existed in Christ.

Scripture declares that Christ is the Sabbath, the bread of life, living water, the Tree of Life, the cornerstone, and the living stone. These were not metaphors invented later; they were realities before creation, revealed afterward through physical forms. Creation does not define Christ—Christ defines creation.

This message carefully dismantles the assumption that physical things are ultimate reality. Drawing from Hebrews, Colossians, and the teachings of Jesus Himself, Gene Edwards shows that the visible world is a shadow, while Christ alone is substance. Even religious practices such as Sabbath observance are revealed as shadows pointing to a Person who existed eternally.

A key emphasis of this teaching is that believers must feed their spirit, not merely their body or soul. The spirit does not require shadows; it requires reality. When believers need patience, peace, rest, nourishment, or life, the answer is not discipline or effort—it is Christ Himself, who is all these things.

The message also restores Christ to His rightful place of preeminence. He does not come after our needs; He is the fulfillment of every need. Everything real existed before creation, and everything created exists to remind us of Him.

This teaching invites believers to move beyond religious concepts into a revelation of Jesus Christ—to see Him not merely as Savior or teacher, but as the eternal reality behind all things. One day, shadows will pass away, and only Christ will remain, all in all.

Now what are spiritual things? Jonathan, name me one spiritual thing. I have a long way to go here. Jonathan, one spiritual thing is Christ. If your people need food, give them Christ. If they need drink, give them Christ. If they need patience, give them Christ. If they need peace, give them Christ. If they need life, give them resurrection. I am the resurrection. And if one of them needs the moon…give them Christ. I drive this home because I realize even as I sit here how dark our minds get in our religious concepts of the Christian faith. We really get to thinking we need this and this and this and this. And it’s very hard for me to remember that I have a spirit that needs Christ and that food isn’t really food. But listen to Him. I am the bread of life. That’s bread that’s alive. Come to me and drink real and living water. I’m the wheat that falls into the ground, rises again. I am, not the resurrection, I’m resurrection. And sometimes we die, and we really need to come back to life. I am resurrection. I am, I am the manna that came out of heaven and fell to earth. And what Moses gave you was not manna. He said it. Moses didn’t give you manna. I am manna. And he said, Moses didn’t give you manna. I gave you manna. And I have come here again to give you the real manna. To eat and to drink. And if you do not drink me, and if you do not eat me, you do not have a life. I just want you to stop for a moment and know that there was a river before there was creation. A real river.

Now, I’m going to try one more time. Daniel, tell me something. Give me the definition of a tree? Jesus is… Praise the Lord. Right on, brother. Was there a tree before creation? Amen. What was the name of that tree before? The tree of life. Life emanates, comes forth from, is found growing from a tree. I am that tree. I am the tree of life. Good. Daniel passed. Wonderful. That’s really good. Now, I’m going to ask another question.

Were there stones before creation? Were there stones? Oh, you can’t answer. What stone was it? There was a cornerstone. Well, was it… Have you ever picked up a stone? Is that thing dead or alive? There’s a stone. Any stone you’ve ever picked up. Is it dead or alive? Nothing deader than a stone. Have you ever seen a living stone? You have seen a living stone. You. Come on. Are. Say it. Do it. You. Say it. Are. Say it with me. Living. Stone. Built up into a living house. That’s right. Was there a stone before the Lord Jesus created? All right. Good. Here I come again. Kalia, give me the definition of a stone. Christ is the stone we were before the creation. Praise the Lord. You got it, Kalia. Now, brothers and sisters, I just want to remind you of what we’re talking about.

We’re talking about a revelation of Jesus Christ. And I trust that you have something now you didn’t have 20 minutes ago. I trust the Holy Spirit will drive this home to you. That reality existed before creation. And He is. And I want you to know He was clear about what he was. When he saw a stone he said I made that to remind my holy ones who I am. And I made water, let it be beautiful and crystal and clear and cool, and I made it so that my holy ones, my chosen ones, would know what I’m like. And I hung a piece of old dirt in the air out from the earth so that you could look up at it and know what I am to the Father and what the church is to me. I’m talking about the moon. And that when you eat bread, when we take the Lord’s Supper and you eat that bread, you’re looking at a crushed wheat, one seed, that made that whole bread loaf. And that I am the seed, the seed Abraham talked about, and I am a seed that existed before I ever created. And I just want you to know that when that creation came from his fingertip or burst from within him, that’s better, isn’t it? Burst from within him, and creation was in him, all of it was a glorification, a manifestation, a painting, a picture, a shadow, and a reminder of a glory, a grand and glorious glory, whose name is Jesus.

Now, what’s the point of this message? Everything real existed before creation. And everything that we look around us is a reminder of the Lord Jesus Christ and has something of Him written into it. And one of these days, we’re going to have nothing but reality.

Do you know that you’re going to sit down beside a river and you’re going to look at it and you’re going to say, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that water is alive. And you’re going to reach down in it and pull up a stone, and you’re going to look at it and say it’s alive. And you’re going to eat from the tree of life, and the fruit is alive.

And the water is Christ. The stone is Christ. And the tree is Christ. And one day, He will be all in all. And there will be only one reality once more. It will be the Lord Jesus Christ.

The whole universe is Jesus’ shadow. Yes. Like the shadows of man, the whole universe is shadow. Praise the Lord. His shadow. Oh, that’s beautiful. Even our bodies are parts of his shadow. That’s beautiful. In other words, it’s like over here’s the Father, and he is light, nd there stands His son. And on the other side of the Son is the casting of a shadow. And we look at it and its creation. That is beautiful. That was given to us by Romanian. Praise the Lord. So brother, so declare him. Praise the Lord. By the way, just I left one out. You have never seen light .Have you ever looked at the sun? Have you ever looked at it out of the corner? Do you notice there’s a certain dullness to it? You can see a yellow inside of all that white. It is a shadow of light that, if you ever look at it, will strike you blind and maybe dead. He is light.

And we could talk about that forever, but right now we’re just going to remember that there was the Father, the Son was standing there, and in a minute, there’s going to be a shadow cast. We call it the heavens and the earth. Thank you very much, Abel. That’s very wonderful. Flesh and blood did not reveal that to you, brother.

Well, there are no assignments this time for this one. And for message number seven, I have already told the brothers and sisters that it’s not a message from me. It’s from men who’ve come before me, but it’s one we all speak. The book, The Highest Life, is not written by Gene Edwards. It has been written for hundreds of years by a few people who’ve seen its contents. The message I will bring to you Monday is not mine. It belongs to the Eternals. I’ll even give you a hint. There is one last thing that we know of that happened before creation, and that is God worked out before he created an eternal purpose. There was an eternal purpose before creation that had nothing to do with creation. An eternal purpose. Eternal, not finite. We will be there. Thank you folks sitting out there in that living room for being with us. Those of us here in Hungary send you greetings in Christ over the ether waves. And now I’m going to say to all of you that what has been said here tonight has a string that reaches from the beginning to the end. Throughout all of that which God created, there is forever the glorification of Christ by this creation.
