When Jesus Christ Is Truly Lord | Bethany & the Headship of Christ (Part 2)

Beginning with Mary and Martha, Edwards contrasts being consumed with service for Jesus with simply sitting at His feet and receiving from Him. Martha welcomed Christ into her home, but Mary chose to remain at His feet. The lesson is not that Christian service is wrong, but that our deepest commitment must be to Jesus Christ Himself rather than to what we do for Him.

Bethany becomes a powerful picture of the church: a place where Christ can come, rest, fellowship, and be received. It is also the place where costly ointment is poured upon Him. When others ask, “Why this waste?” Edwards draws attention to the deeper issue: Is Jesus Christ worthy of everything?

The message then moves into one of the deeper themes of the Christian life—death and resurrection. Through the story of Lazarus and the breaking of the alabaster vessel, Edwards explains how God can use suffering, loss, and brokenness to bring His people into a deeper experience of resurrection life.

The cross is not something Christians need to manufacture or seek out. Edwards warns against looking for suffering. Instead, when God allows circumstances that bring us face-to-face with the cross, we learn to receive His sovereign work rather than continually searching for an escape.

This message challenges believers to reconsider what it means to receive Jesus not merely as Savior, but as Lord and Head—to sit at His feet, honor Him above everything else, and trust Him through death into resurrection.
