Unveiling Identity in Christ • Sep 17th 1994
In this deeply reflective message, Gene Edwards explores the profound reality of intimacy with Christ and what it means to live in the heavenly places. Drawing from Scripture and decades of ministry experience, he invites believers to reconsider their understanding of space, time, eternity, and their place in Christ.
Gene begins by challenging common assumptions about God and creation. Rather than imagining God existing somewhere within the universe, he describes all creation — including space and time — as existing within Christ Himself. The physical universe, with all its galaxies and dimensions, is contained in Him, while the spiritual realm exists beyond mass, space, and time.
From there, he turns to the believer’s identity. Your spirit, he explains, is not native to the material realm but to the eternal realm — the heavenlies. Because of this, the believer has the right to experience fellowship with Christ beyond the limitations of time and physical reality.
Throughout the message, Gene paints a sweeping vision of God’s relationship to time. The Lord stands at creation, at the present moment, and at the end of all things simultaneously. From that vantage point, God chose His people before creation because He already sees them at the end — faithful and still loving Him.
The message then moves into one of its most striking themes: the relationship between Christ and His church as bride and groom. Using Galatians 2:20 as an example, Gene encourages believers to see prayer not as petition alone but as a living conversation rooted in union with Christ.
He concludes with a practical invitation: pair with another believer, find passages of Scripture (especially in Galatians), and enter into the dialogue between Christ and His bride. In doing so, believers begin to experience what it means to live and move in the riches of Christ in the heavenly places.
This message is both theological and experiential — an invitation to step beyond familiar patterns of prayer and discover deeper communion with the Lord.
(Audience member) I want to add something, the way that I comprehend some of what you’re saying, and it’s been with me for some time, but as we have a solar system and planets revolving around planets, we have molecules inside us, atoms and molecules and neurons and things revolving around themselves. These things are within us. We are within the universe. The universe is in Christ, and so that might help encapsulate it in our minds.
Thank you, brother. Okay, here’s what I want you to do. I want you to pair off in twos. You don’t have to do this. You’re free to not do it. I’d like you to find a part of Galatians, and when you get to this meeting tomorrow morning, I’d like you to remember that Gene only brought two messages while he was here, and they weren’t very clear… to you. They’re clear to me. I want you to sit down with your brother or your sister…I’d like it not to be your wife unless that’s just something really uniquely yours. I’d like you to get with someone, and I’d like the two of you to sit down and find a conversation between Jesus Christ, your Lord, and that beautiful girl.
Now, one of the ways you can do that is to take one verse as His and the next verse as hers and let them change it. Write it down in such a way that it’s changed. You can find this. Find a glorious place. Not one of these places where “and you saved me from my sins and my wickedness.” Listen, saints, we’ve groveled in our sins long enough. That’s past business. Right now, you are a glorious church without spot nor wrinkle. You ain’t got nothing wrong with you. And according to Corinthians, you are not indictable. You can’t be brought to trial. You can’t even be accused. You are, in fact, holy, blameless, and faithful. Now that’s that girl. That’s that girl. You find that girl in all her glory.
And here’s something else, and I listen really carefully to you, sometimes you’ll say, as you’ve read, “and I’m going to be.” Let’s have a girl who speaks in absolutes. I am. You are. I have become. I am presently. Give this gal some boldness because she’s got it. And let’s let them talk. Let her express herself to him, let Him express Himself to her. Remember, He’s very in love with this girl, and she’s a little bit awed, but she’s in love with Him too. She will tell him what He means to her; He will tell her what she means to Him, and she means a lot to him; in fact, when the Father said to Jesus Christ, the creator of the heavens and earth, He said what would you like to have as an inheritance, I’ll give you your inheritance, what would you like to have? Do you know what his response was? You don’t know, do you? Do you know what it is? What did he ask for? He asked for the church. Now that must be some incredible thing, this thing called church, when with all the things He might inherit, He had asked for the most glorious inheritance, the church, Ecclesia, Christa. This guy, this brother, this Lord of yours, is in love with her.
Find some verses. They don’t have to be together; put them together, write them down, then lay them aside and turn them into prayer. You probably need to read the whole thing out loud two or three times. Now you’re going to do one of the scariest things in the world. One of you speak. You have this right. You are in Him, and you are in her, and you are part of her, and you are part of Him. One of you speak to the girl, and one of you speak to the groom. One of you speak to the bride, and one of you speak to the groom. Now, these are things you’ve never done, heard of, or dreamed of, but that doesn’t mean you can’t, and it sure doesn’t mean you don’t have a right to, for you have the right to all the spiritual blessings in heavenly places that are in Christ.
Now this is a bold move on your part. Work on it. Talk about it, but then I’m going to use a word here: pray, but it’s going to be a conversation between the groom and the bride. And it’s going to be tomorrow morning, it is going to be bright and early, either right before breakfast or right after, I wish it would be right before, but I have seen the rooms you’re in. Twenty of you in a room, there’s one bird dog in there who speaks and talks and fellowships till 2 a.m., isn’t there? Well, kill him. Get yourself some good rest. Meet with your friend in the morning. Skip breakfast if you have to. Make it short if you have to eat breakfast. Let’s get in here tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock, and let’s see what the body of Christ has to report about things in the heavens between that girl…I would like to hear reports from those who saw, heard, or spoke with that girl. I’d like us to meet that girl face-to-face tomorrow. We have a meeting tomorrow morning, and it’s alright if part of it’s not held in space-time. We can hold part of that meeting in other realms. Now, this may be the biggest flop that ever was. You might go home and say, boy, that didn’t work, did it? That’s fine with me because if you try it two or three times, you’ll never let go.
Now that’s a lot to throw at you. Do you have a question? Who are you going to meet with? That’s up to you. You will need some notebook paper. If you can find one whole passage together, that would be great, but if not, don’t worry about it. Get your verses in a little pile. Yes, sir. For instance, let me see if I can give you. I hadn’t even thought about doing this.
Bride speaking – Thank you for taking me to the grave. I really didn’t want to live that way any longer. I carried many things to the grave, but only one was precious to me. All others I came to destroy, but I brought you. You came into me, and I took you into the tomb with me. It was joy unspeakable. I went to that cross for the glory that was set before me, and you are that glory. Oh, dear lover, I rose, and everything had changed. The creation was gone, and I looked at myself, and I was so holy and so beautiful.
Lord – Yes, you were the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, and I promised that I would one day take you as my bride, and at that moment, I became your very life.
Bride – Dear beloved, I watch you live, and I can’t live the way you live.
Lord – Dear bride of mine, you don’t have to. I’m the one who does the praying, I’m the one who does the witnessing, I am the one who satisfies the Father, I am the work, I am your life, you only live inside of me.
Bride – Lord, I’m alive, but I’m not. I’m just one with you, and Lord, I am so glad it is you that lives and not me.
